　　TheoriginofthissummerfestivalcentersaroundascholarlygovernmentofficialnamedChuYuan。Hewasagoodandrespectedman，butbecauseofthemisdeedsofjealousrivalsheeventuallyfellintodisfavorintheemperor39；scourt。
　　Unabletoregaintherespectoftheemperor，inhissorrowChuYuanthrewhimselfintotheMiLowriver。BecauseoftheiradmirationforChuYuan，thelocalpeoplelivingadjacenttotheMiLoRiverrushedintotheirboatstosearchforhimwhilethrowingriceintothewaterstoappeasetheriverdragons。
　　AlthoughtheywereunabletofindChuYuan，theireffortsarestillcommemoratedtodayduringtheDragonBoatFestival。

　　AttheendoftheZhouDynasty，theareawenowknowasChinahadfallenintoastateoffragmentationandconflict。WhiletheZhoudynastyhadruledforseveralcenturies，severalotherstates，originallyfeudaldomains，triedtocarveouttheirownkingdoms。ThestateofQinwouldeventuallyemergethevictorandunifyallofChinaunderoneruleforthefirsttimeinhistory。
　　QuYuanservedasministertotheZhouEmperor。Awiseandarticulateman，hewaslovedbythecommonpeople。Hedidmuchtofightagainsttherampantcorruptionthatplaguedthecourttherebyearningtheenvyandfearofotherofficials。Therefore，whenheurgedtheemperortoavoidconflictwiththeQinKingdom，theofficialspressuredtheEmperortohavehimremovedfromservice。Inexile，hetraveled，taughtandwroteforseveralyears。HearingthattheZhouhadbeendefeatedbytheQin，hefellintodespairandthrewhimselfintotheMilouRiver。Hislastpoemreads：

　　TheModernDragonBoatFestivalstartedfromthattimetothisday，peoplecommemoratedQuYuanthroughDragonBoatRaces，eatingzongzi，andseveralotheractivities，ontheanniversaryofhisdeath：thefifthdayofthefifthlunarmonth。
　　DragonBoatracesarethemostexcitingpartofthefestival，drawingcrowdsofspectators。DragonBoatsaregenerallybrightlypaintedanddecoratedcanoes。Ranginganywherefrom40to100feetinlength，theirheadsareshapedlikeopenmoutheddragons，whilethesternsendwithascalytail。。Dependingonthelength，upto80rowerscanpowertheboat。Adrummerandflagcatcherstandatthefrontoftheboat。Beforeadragonboatenterscompetition，itmustbebroughttolifebypaintingtheeyesinasacredceremony。Racescanhaveanynumberofboatscompeting，withthewinnerbeingthefirstteamtograbaflagattheendofthecourse。AnnualracestakeplacealloverChina，HongKong，Macao，Taiwan，andotheroverseasChinesecommunities。

　　IntheearlyyearsoftheChineseRepublic，DuanWuwasalsocelebratedasPoets39；Day，duetoQuYuan39；sstatusasChina39；sfirstpoetofpersonalrenown（名声名望）。
　　Today，peopleeatbamboowrappedsteamedglutinous（粘的）ricedumplingscalledzongzi（thefoodoriginallyintendedtofeedthefish）andracedragonboatsinmemoryofQu39；sdramaticdeath。
